Call for artists to create engaging spaces

Artists with a connection to the Shoalhaven region are invited to take part in the arts program for the $438 million Shoalhaven Hospital Redevelopment, with Expressions of Interest now open.

The artworks will feature within the new, purpose-built 7-storey Acute Services Building and refurbished spaces of the hospital, to create calming and supportive spaces that promote wellbeing for staff, patients and their families.

The arts program will include a large-scale artwork on the entry stairwell between the ground and first floor of the new Acute Services building, which will welcome patients and visitors as they enter from the Shoalhaven Street entry.

There is also an opportunity to create vibrant artworks for five Paediatric treatment rooms in the new and refurbished areas of the hospital. These artworks are intended to appeal to young people requiring treatment and help provide a comforting distraction while they are receiving care.

Established and emerging artists, living or working in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven area are encouraged to apply.

Expressions of Interest will be open until midnight on Monday 17 February 2025 and more information can be found here.

Health Infrastructure’s Arts in Health program supports the inclusion of arts in the NSW healthcare system to improve consumer, staff and carer experiences. The commissioning of artworks will be carried out in collaboration with Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District staff and the community.

Construction for the Shoalhaven Hospital Redevelopment is progressing and will include a new emergency department, intensive care unit, double the number of operating theatres and endoscopy rooms, a dedicated cardiology inpatient unit, and a new rooftop helipad.

Construction of the new acute services building is expected to be complete in 2026.
